While the export process allows you to select albums and years to include in your download, it doesn’t permit more detailed fine-tuning. What to do before downloading all your Google Photos Instead, each one has to be opened and saved individually, which could prove laborious if you have a large number. The downside? You can’t download multiple albums at once. The benefit of this approach is that you can selectively download your snaps in just a couple of clicks, and keeps them organized on your hard drive. This will compress all of the images and videos contained in the album into a single zip file for you to download. Click an individual album and, once it’s loaded, hit those three dots in the top right and select ‘download all’. Under the ‘albums’ tab, select ‘view all albums’ to see your entire collection. If you’ve already sorted your snaps into Google Photos albums – or saved some of Google’s suggested ‘smart albums’ – you can easily download their pre-sorted contents. How to download albums from Google Photos This makes it easy to save similar images, such as ones from the same place. Use the search bar to filter your images – such as by location or date – then pick from the results. If you’re planning on categorizing snaps on your hard drive, it’s also a good opportunity to download batches to match your sorting criteria. From June 2021, Google will also offer a free storage management tool to help you find and delete shots that are underexposed or blurry, which should make it easier to pick through pictures to find your favorites. While this method isn’t as simple as downloading all of your Google Photos images in one go, it allows you to save data by selecting only the shots you really want to keep. Google will compress your chosen shots into a single zip archive, ready for saving. Once you’re happy with your choice, click the three vertical dots in the top right corner, then click ‘download’. Holding shift when you click will also allow you to highlight batches of snaps between the first and last shots you select. You can then click other images to add to your selection. Using Google Photos on the web, hover over a particular image’s thumbnail and click the checkmark in the top left. But unless you only have a handful of shots stored in the cloud, downloading individually will be a painstaking way to save all of your photos.Īn alternative is to pick batches of snaps to save simultaneously. Simply open the photo you want to save, click the three dots in the top right corner and select ‘download’. The most straightforward way to download all your Google Photos to your PC or Mac is one at a time, which you may find is the best approach. Whether it's one-by-one or in batches, we talk you through the various ways that you can download all your Google Photos to your PC or Mac. Once you've reached your free limit, you'll then have to sign up for a Google One storage plan, which starts at US$1.99 / £1.59 per month for 100GB. While it's definitely unlikely to break the bank, these small costs all add up and so if you want to avoid paying this, learning how to download your photos to your hard drive is going to be well worth it.

I was running on a 120hz monitor, and I couldn’t positively identify any frames of latency between the mouse starting to move and pixels on the screen changing. I’m sure this is better on a more modern system. Step 3: If anyone of the right/left/middle/side button or the scroll wheel on the screen lightens up while you are doing. 4) If that's not enough then uninstall the game from the same place, restart PC, reinstall the game from MS Store Hub (three dots at top right of Store app) > My Library. In my case since I have an exclusive agreement with one agency I’m not keen on entering into another. If you enter into an exclusive agreement with an agency you better be dead certain that you think the limitations imposed on you are well worth it. I have photographs with agencies that don’t require “exclusivity” and I have photographs at another agency that does. These days its tough to get any stock representation without “exclusivity” and the justification is always that the agency can secure higher prices for each license. I suppose my outlook on this is that if you’re serious enough to sell your photography through an agency you should be capable of selling your own work individually and reserve the option to do so. Granted for some this may be a non-factor as not everyone wants to deal with the headache of licensing their own work directly. What I find most troubling about the Getty agreement it is that they don’t permit the sale of your work on your own web site. It’s tough enough to make a buck these days with photography, but signing an exclusive deal is a sure fire way to cut off other income opportunities. Many old timers recommend avoiding exclusivity like the plague due to the limiting nature of it. Note if a Getty selected image has been previously sold through a prior licensing agreement either individually or through another agency it is then ineligible for submission.įor those that are new to stock photography “exclusivity” should be approached very carefully. Per the terms its also OK to sell prints or books as long as they are limited edition and/or signed. How convenient that they also include the acceptability of “Photo Sharing” in these terms. Use of photographs selected by Getty to sell on your behalf are OK to use for personal or self promotion. There is a limitation on selling images that are similar or “sister images” for commercial purposes. In the case of the Flickr-Getty offer… it is an exclusive agreement. Is the agreement I’m being asked to sign going to restrict my ability to market and sell my work through other outlets? These three things will tell you how you’re valued by the agency and give you a window to the overhead the company is carrying to stay in business. When I evaluate stock agencies to work with I first check three things: Exclusivity, Royalties and Rights to Control Claims. What You Need to Know Before Accepting Your Flickr Collection Invitation This isn’t just conjecture, such interpretation is made from off-line communication in my inquiry to this program. This is Getty’s way of picking up good one-off images with out committing to photographers who might be inconsistent or below the standard they’d hold normal Getty contributors to. The between the line on this is that Getty sees opportunity with individual Flickr images not Flickr photographers. Typically photographers are chosen to be contributors and sets of photographs are submitted for review, acceptance and ultimate submission to a stock agency’s collection. This is substantial departure from how images are normally submitted, reviewed and accepted by Getty and other stock agencies. All images to be considered for review have to be on Flickr and have to be found by Getty photo editors choosing images. Have other images from the same shoot that you’d like to submit for acceptance? You can’t. This means to have an image considered it has to be on Flickr. Only invited images at this time are eligible for addition to the Flickr Collection. The big caveat… when you get an invitation you’re not being asked to take part as a photographer like a normal Getty contributor. For now it would seem they’re looking to launch the Flickr Collection on Getty in March. The Flickr Collection is going to be a branded pool of images that Getty markets similar to their Stone, Taxi, Photonica, Photodisc, etc. A link is provided in the invitation to enroll in the program, fill out paperwork (contributors agreement, tax docs, etc.) and submit high resolution images to be evaluated for acceptance. Getty representatives through Flickr are sending out email invitations with an initial list of images with in your photostream that have been selected for inclusion into the Flickr Collection on Getty Images. To cut to the chase for now I’m going to be passing on the opportunity and below are the reasons why, but first how the Flickr-Getty arrangement works. (See Building the Flickr Collection on Getty Images) I was one of the many photographers who received an invitation and decided to check it out. Earlier today Flickr announced on their blog they’ve kicked off Phase 2 of their effort to build the Flickr Collection on Getty Images by sending out invitations to various Flickr photographers. Moreover, since many of her stories are told in present tense, her characters seldom engage in meditation or attempt a search for meaning, and there is little cause for her narrators to indulge in exposition or exploration. Beattie's characters seldom experience the kind of epiphany of awareness we have been accustomed to in twentieth century short fiction from James Joyce and Sherwood Anderson up through Eudora Welty and Bernard Malamud. Beattie's people seldom know what makes them do the things they do and have no real sense of purpose or destiny thus instead of engaging in deliberate action, they more often seem acted upon. Seen as the spokesperson for her generation, Beattie has been alternately praised for her satiric view of that era's passivity and criticized for presenting sophisticated New Yorker magazine characters unable to understand themselves or others. They fill the reader with awe at the complexity of the human experience and the genius of William Trevor.Īnn Beattie ranks second only to Raymond Carver as being responsible for the renaissance of the American short story in the 1970s and 80s. Every one of them deserves to be read and reread, their motivations marveled at, their sentences savored. Trevor’s stories are not cultural examinations of either the old Ireland of legend or the new Ireland of the European Union, but rather profoundly wise explorations of individual, yet universal, secrets and mysteries of the heart. As in all great short stories, from Chekhov to Carver, there is mystery and not a little menace in the stories of William Trevor-secrets so tangled and inexplicable that efforts to explain them with the language of psychology or sociology or history are either futile or absurd. This is an anthology of stories from Trevor’s most recent collections. It’s only when she seems to be seduced by the public demand for the novelistic that she breaks faith with the great masters who have preceded her. She succeeds much more often than she fails because she brilliantly exploits what the form does best. Eisenberg is indeed a master of the short story. The best stories f Deborah Eisenberg, who has been called a master of the form, reflect her continuing conscientious effort to provide a structure and a syntax for feelings unspeakable until just the right rhythm makes what was loose and lying around inside clench and cluster into a meaningful pattern. Good stories, like good poems, don’t pontificate. The kind of complexity that fascinates masters of the short story is not captured by using more and more words but by using just the right ones. The short story’s lack of room to ruminate about so-called “big” socio-political issues is one reason the form is not popular with so-called “serious” critics who prefer genres that generalize. The Collected Stories of Deborah Eisenberg Of all those listed above, here are the ones that I have read, with a brief comment on each: The New York Times’ 100 Notable books included ten short story collections: Mishra chose: David Means's The Spot Yiyun Li's Gold Boy, Emerald Girl and The Collected Stories of Deborah Eisenberg. Pankij Mishra, who asked: “Is short fiction with its necessarily fragmentary form and brisk epiphanies, better placed than the panoramic novel to capture the weird disjointedness and partial visions of modern life?” adding he was more captivated this year by short stories than long novels. Roddy Doyle picked Amy Bloom's collection Where the God of Love Hangs Out Byatt picked Yiyun Li's Gold Boy, Emerald Girl The Guardian asked individual reviewers to list their favorites:Ī. They listed Patricia Engel’s Vida as one of their “best debut collections.” National Public Radio listed Gold Boy, Emerald Girl by Yiyun Li & The Collected Stories Of Deborah Eisenberg. Slate listed only The New Yorker Stories by Ann BeattieĪtlantic chose Collected Stories of Deborah Eisenberg & What Becomes by A. The New Yorker listed only Barry Hannah’s Long, Last, Happy. Los Angeles Times’ David Ulin listed only The Collected Stories of Deborah Eisenberg. Publishers Weekly listed only one: Sourland by Joyce Carol Oates. The San Francisco Chronicle listed only one: Selected Stories by William Trevor. The Village Voice listed no short story collections in their fiction list. The Washington Post listed only “Best Novels” in their fiction category, as if short stories did not exist. I have have looked over the “Best Books of 2010” lists of the major newspapers, networks, and magazines and list below the short story collections chosen for those lists, along with my own comments on those I have read. Maybe best of all, PDFpen also has an extremely useful Correction tool. Finally, there are some simple line drawing tools that allow you to imprint various shapes. Obviously both of these imprint tools are very handy for filling out scanned forms, including signing the form with a graphic image of your signature (which you can just drag and drop from the Finder). There is, of course, a "Graphic Imprint" tool as well that allows you to place images on the document. These notes are thus perfect for commenting on papers, especially when combined with PDFpen's highlighters, which let you select text and highlight it in one of four colors.Īs well as the Note tool, there's both a "Comment" tool and a "Text Imprint" that each allow you to place text directly on the document in editable and resizable boxes over the PDF content. Furthermore, these are standard PDF notes which can be viewed in both Adobe Acrobat Reader and OS X's built-in Preview application. This allows much longer notes than would be possible if you were directly placing text onto the page itself. There's a Note tool that allows you to leave notes anywhere on the page, placing a small speech bubble icon on the page, with the note text itself in a small pop-up windows. In Single Page view you gain access to PDFpen's editing tools. In addition to Document view, there's also also Single or Facing Page view. While I had no problems with PDFpen when testing with shorter documents (<50 pages), when I threw my old ~300 page PhD dissertation (the only long PDF I had) into it, it repeatedly froze up with the spinning beachball of death when I selected Print and had to be Force Quit. Unfortunately, with large documents, PDFpen can become unresponsive and even lock up in Document view. The pages are numbered in the bottom right hand corner so you can clearly see the ordering as you change pages about. These operations look very slick as you're working directly with thumbnails of your pages, that makes it easier to see exactly which pages, especially as you can zoom in and out. You can move one or more pages around, delete entire sections of pages, etc. In this respect it works exactly as you would expect. In document view, you can select and re-arrange pages by drag and drop as well as delete pages. Unlike Preview, the drawer does not show page thumbnails, because the main interface itself can be switched to Document view, which will generate thumbnails of the entire document as below. There's also a slide-out drawer that gives access to search, a table of contents if on exists, and a summary of comments (if any). Let's see how they compare.Īs you can see above the main interface of PDFpen more or less consists of the PDF itself plus the tool bar. Our two candidates are PDFClerk (€30 or $40.50) from SintraWorks and PDFpen ($49.95 or $94.95 for Pro edition, educational pricing available) from SmileOnMyMac. So I thought I would look at two much less expensive PDF tools on the Mac, to see how they stack up, and to decide which one I want to spend my own hard earned cash on. Of course the 900 pound gorilla of PDF tools is Adobe Acrobat unfortunately, it's priced accordingly (Acrobat Professional is $379.99 at Amazon). All of this is to say, I'm always on the lookout for good tools to help me deal with PDFs. I also often convert my students' papers to PDF for commenting, etc. In my research I'm constantly reading PDF versions of journal articles, and often I'm submitting articles of my own in PDF (though a distressing number of journals require Microsoft Word DOC submissions). We discuss the potential implications of our findings on information visualization design. In my professional life I deal with a lot of PDFs. We use the qualitative approaches of open coding, interviewing, and affinity diagramming to explore the use of recognizable and novel visuals, and the interplay between visualization and diagrammatic elements with words, numbers and labels. Our goal is to arrive at a better understanding of the nature of visuals that are created spontaneously during brainstorming, thinking, communicating, and general problem solving on whiteboards. As part of this recent direction, we have studied a large collection of whiteboards in a research institution, where people make active use of combinations of words, diagrams and various types of visuals to help them further their thought processes. While it is still most common for information visualization researchers to develop new visualizations from a data-or taskdriven perspective, there is growing interest in understanding the types of visualizations people create by themselves for personal use. |
